Lesson 1: Boating Terminology
General Vocabulary
The first step towards becoming a safe boater is learning the language that goes along with boating. Just like any other sport or activity, boating has its own unique vocabulary to go along with it . Before you step foot on a boat it is important to know as many of these terms as possible. The following are a few of most commonly used terms in boating along with their definitions: |
ABOARD - On or within the boat.
ADRIFT - Loose, not on moorings or towline.
BUOY - An anchored float used for marking a position on the water or a hazard or a shoal and for mooring.
CURRENT - The horizontal movement of water.
INBOARD - More toward the center of a vessel; inside; a motor fitted inside a boat.
KNOT - A measure of speed equal to one nautical mile (6076 feet) per hour.
MOORING - An arrangement for securing a boat to a mooring buoy or a pier.
OUTBOARD - Toward or beyond the boat's sides. A detachable engine mounted on a boat's stern.
WINDWARD - Toward the direction from which the wind is coming.
